Centennial families have another reason to cheer this fall: William Tennent alum Ryan Richter is making waves as interim head coach of the Philadelphia Union.
An athlete at Tennent, Richter went on to play soccer at La Salle University before being drafted by his hometown MLS club in 2011. After years coaching in the Union's system, he stepped into the head coaching role in late May — when the team held the worst record in the league. Since then, the Union have gone unbeaten and are now firmly in the playoff race.
Those who knew Richter growing up in Southampton aren't surprised. Former coaches and childhood friends describe a kid who hated losing more than he loved winning, and who pushed himself — and everyone around him — to work harder.
